Newsjacking is a trend in online publishing, where where you inject your own ideas into breaking news, in order to get coverage yourself. I did a simple newsjack this week.
After the WSOP finally released their schedule, after putting out the initial release, I followed it up with a column where I shared my thoughts on the changes to the schedule.
It was an easy content decision to make, because the conversation of the WSOP was ripe and people still wanted to discuss and read about it.
When timed well, newsjacking can bring with it a lot of free publicity, traffic and authority. A great example of newsjacking for marketing purposes in poker came this week.
This came hot off the heels of a video of them being released which had evidence of their alleged cheating at a Partouche Poker Tour final table.

Do they even know or care what the GPI is? Possibly not. If you break it down, it was quite an empty gesture in itself, but it was also a brilliant PR move.
It pays the first time when it invests capital into creating a strong brand that gets recommended by word of mouth or in forums cost for creating good software, providing tables full of fish, having a good customer support, famous pros, etc.
It then pays again when it advertises via print, television or internet. Finally, it pays for the players once more when it forces potential VIP players who were attracted to them through their initial marketing efforts, to sign up via a rakeback affiliate that has ironically done very little to bring the players to the room.
The paper then goes on to give probably one of the most easily understood explanations of why high raking players are not as valuable as they appear to be.
Rake is the product of liquidity which has been put in motion by being played with. Liquidity is therefore the direct pre-requisite for rake, and without a continuous influx of fresh liquidity the liquidity pool would dry up and no new rake could be produced.
Liquidity is generated by players who deposit more than they cash out, contrary to most high volume players, who generally cash out more than they deposit.
The truth of the matter is that the bulk of high MGR players are paying their rake with the money they win off losing players. It is these losing players that are the true source of rake, while high volume players simply ensure that this liquidity is converted faster.
Player A, while generating little rake adds something beyond the rake to the poker ecosystem. Where I think Dominik and the PokerStrategy crew go slightly astray in their paper is as I mentioned before they seem to focus on rakeback affiliates as the core issue.
How about on a monthly basis? Using an average of the last couple of months, what would you say the number is?
It kind of depends, but 30, is probably the right number. In some instances, we do know. It depends on the poker room.
Give or take, first time depositors I would say around to a month, roughly speaking. How does Poker Strategy acquire most of its new traffic and new customers coming into the site?
Dominik : Well, it is largely viral. Our main source of traffic is clearly existing customers recommending other people to join our community. That is by far the most important acquisition channel for us.
Now, we do try to incentivize that by having a Tell a Friend program where if you refer somebody to us you can get a small CPA for that. In a nutshell, the answer is virality.
Warren : You do have a paid referral program for players who refer other players, correct? Can you just tell our audience, in two minutes, why is that a bad idea for poker rooms to be avoiding strong players?
Dominik : Let me start with the first point. It is absolutely correct for poker rooms to recruit new players to the game and also recreation of players.
Ultimately, every dollar that can be won at poker by strong players that can be converted into rake must have been deposited by somebody else.
Increasing deposits from new players is very important for the sustainability of poker. There are multiple reasons for that. Of course, it can be an outrage in the communities.
At the end of the day, I think the most convincing argument that gets poker rooms that are on this misguided path to stop doing that is if you can rationally show that this is hurting their bottom line.
The actual details are really hard to explain in words. Warren : Sure. Some broader based questions for you, what were three of the key decisions you made in the infancy of the business that really helped make the company what it is today?
You rarely come home and suddenly everything is great. Warren : How did you stay focused on one site and one business? I think this is a mistake that many affiliates make.
The new affiliates in the first year, they launch 50 websites. How did you do that? Dominik : First of all, we just have one website. We had some external agencies, but that was a total failure.
SEO is not our focus at all. Now, I guess this habit of starting many websites probably comes from an SEO mindset.
I think that is going out of fashion more and more quickly. My recommendation to affiliates is to build a valuable product. What does value mean?
Value either means value to the customer or value to the business partner. A website that actually does something and adds something. This has always been our focus.
Now, of course building a valuable product is much more effort. In general, that would probably be my recommendation for affiliates that are starting out is to build something that actually generates value in any way, shape, or form.
It could be different things. It could be news content. It could be education like we do. It could be some kind of more disruptive idea like Pokertube, for example.
I do think that is the most sustainable thing to do. Also, if you build proper value for the customer and for the business partner, you are much harder to be cut out as an unnecessary middle man.
The question of what you call 'mobile' is then subject to debate because a laptop isn't considered mobile by the industry but I think it is.
Creating a good mobile product has two main challenges. First you have the screen size of the phone and then the difference of using a touch screen.
In general, the standard poker clients that are on the PC are still pretty much the same as they were in The good thing is that if you at some stage want to have a unified client that runs on a PC, a mobile and a tablet then you're almost forced into a few of the paradigms that can't be applied to all PC poker clients.
Ultimately I see a lot of convergence there and I see a lot of room for improvement and innovation there. Innovation on PC poker clients might actually be driven by mobile devices.
